This is what my husband Eric normally looks like.
But after he got the following news:
Jill Davis at HarperCollins imprint Katherine Tegen Books has acquired Charlie Pie Chart, a new series by Marilyn Sadler, co-creator of the Handy Manny television show, and Eric Comstock, illustrator and creator of the new series. In the first installment, Charlie Pie Chart and the Case of the Missing Slice, family pizza night is disrupted when a slice disappears, and boy detective Charlie Pie Chart must use math and his unconventional methods to solve the mystery. The first book is scheduled for fall 2015; Lori Nowicki at Painted Words negotiated the seven-book deal for world rights.
For days, maybe even weeks, we had to put up with this.
There are a few points of irony to be found in this turn of events.
• This is a book about math by Eric Comstock. According to Jack Comstock, age 9, "Don't ask dad for help with your math homework if you want a good grade."
• This morning I found Eric completing an interview about himself and struggling to answer a question about his most embarrasing moment. I'm posting today just to help him out.
• Three years ago, Eric wanted to focus on illustration, but didn't think he'd be doing a children's book anytime soon. He was right, he's doing seven.
Please give my hubby some congratulations as well as his family for sticking by him. My children have had to turn in homework with Charlie Pie Chart doodles absent mindedly sketched on them. We have had to eat around illustrations covering our dining table. We have had to teach Eric how fractions and percentages work. And, we've all had to keep a really great secret until today!
Congratulations Eric!!!
